Snow Leopard Expedition (Ladakh)
The “grey ghost” of the Himalayas! It is the most mythical and wonderful of all the animals that roam the mighty high-altitude ranges. Widely considered to be one of the most beautiful of cats, it is known as “Shan” in Ladakhi, “Irbis” in Mongolian, “Tai-Lung” in Kung Fu Panda, or “Unica Unica” by scientists. The Snow Leopard is regarded by many as the most enigmatic of the big cat family. With a habitat range limited to some of the most hostile environments in the world, little is known about this remarkable animal, making the prospect of spotting one a memory few others can compare to.
The Snow Leopard is the ultimate predator in habitats where stone and rubble are the only elements for camouflage, and scree and suspended cliffs are the hunting grounds. Paws specially adapted to bursts of speed and stealth that border on the surreal have earned it the sobriquet of “The Phantom Stalker.”
The terrain surrounding Ulley is generally rocky with thin soil cover, supporting poor vegetation growth. Streams and rivers have deposited a thick layer of sand along their banks. The climate of the area is subarctic to arctic, with less rainfall during summers and heavy snowfall during winters, and temperatures dropping much below freezing point. In this cold desert, many rare and endangered animal species are found, including the elusive Snow Leopard, Ibex, Shapo (Ladakh Urial), Tibetan Hare, Himalayan Red Fox, Tibetan Wolf, etc. The variety of fauna found includes Partridges, Golden Eagles, Himalayan Snow Cocks, Bearded Vultures, Horned Larks, Red Billed Chuffs, etc.

Villagers are trained in hospitality and are part of a community conservation effort to conserve the endangered snow leopard. Upon reaching Ulley around lunchtime, take a short break before exploring the village. In the afternoon, join our spotters and wait for a chance to sight snow leopards. Our spotters are located in different villages and valleys to maximize the chances of spotting snow leopards. They start scanning from 6 am to 6 pm and will radio us if there is any news of snow leopard sightings. We may drive to nearby villages if there are reports of snow leopard sightings. Over the next 7 days, we will explore the area and scan for wildlife every day. After breakfast, we will venture out with our team in search of snow leopards and other wildlife, including wolves, red foxes, Asiatic ibex, and various species of mammals and birds. Each day, depending on sightings, we will undertake short drives, walks, and hikes, returning to Ulley in the evening. Accommodation will be provided in local homestays or lodges.
