Essence of Tanzania and Calving Safari

We go to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area in northern Tanzania. It’s home to the vast, volcanic Ngorongoro Crater and “big 5” game (elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino). Home to herds of wildebeests and zebras this African plain is crossed during their annual migration. Once a gigantic volcano, the Ngorongoro Crater is now the largest intact caldera in the world. We explore the wildlife that surrounds this beautiful landscape.
The Ndutu Safari lodge is located in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area on the edge of the Southern Serengeti plains filled with acacia trees and wide views across the landscape with vast animal sightings and the spectacular Ngorongoro Crater, the Olduvai Gorge, forests, mountains and the vast plains of Ndutu stretching un-fenced to Serengeti.

The biggest highlight of this open Safari is that it joins to the central Serengeti and the Tarangire National Park, which is where the annual migratory route crosses of  thousands of wildebeest, zebra, antelope who come to graze with their calves and their predators .

Meet at arrival point Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to your lodge in Arusha for pre-safari briefing.
Our Safari begins by passing through the town centre of Arusha and witnessing the sights and sounds of a colorful and bustling African city. We depart the city from the south west in the direction of the Great Rift Valley then into Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Ngorongoro is collapsed volcano – an incredible natural amphitheatre, 25 km across and teeming with all of the African big game. Morning descent into the crater for spectacular scenery and game viewing in what has been described as the eighth wonder of the world. Tonight we are staying on the crater rim, it is quite common for zebra, buffalo and even elephant to be grazing right outside the lodge. NGORONGORO SOPA LODGE (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Today we transfer through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area to Ndutu to experience the great Wildebeest migration. A million wildebeest come to the southern areas of the Serengeti  and Ndutu during December through May. They calve on the plains in February and gallop through the woodlands. From June through November, the plains are dry and the great herds gone. This is the time when the resident animals converge around Ndutu’s waterholes and marshes – elephants, giraffes, impalas, every kind of cat and a profusion of birds. Wet season or dry, there is lots to see, and you will never feel just one of a herd

We enjoy a further exploration of Ndutu. The habitats are natural and we can game drive with a picnic lunch to explore further afield. We continue to track the breathtaking wildebeest migration with an annual movement of approx. 1.2 million wildebeest and 600,000 zebra and 300,000 Thomason gazelle. In the late afternoon we return to the Nasikia Mobile Migration Camp (FB) for dinner and overnight.

We take part in an early morning game drive before returning for lunch and resting. In the afternoon, we set off to see the nocturnal animals beginning their night’s work.

We enjoy further exploration of the endless plains. The habitats are natural and we can game drive with a picnic lunch to explore further afield. There are resident cats and herd animals for us to observe.

Central Serengeti is calling today! Game drive in the rolling grasslands. Criss-crossed with forested riverine valleys, the Serengeti plays home to millions of Africa’s large mammals, making this one of the world’s most famous wildlife destinations. We continue to the Camp for dinner and overnight.
