Nestled on the edge of the majestic Zambezi River, Mutemwa Lodge is an anglers’ and birders’ paradise that offers an authentic and unique African experience. Mutemwa (meaning “place of the big trees”) is located under a lattice of magnificent indigenous trees on the western bank of the Upper Zambezi River in Western Zambia, between Sesheke and Sioma.
Mutemwa’s access to over 30km of secluded Zambezi River has been luring fishermen and adventurers alike for the past 15 years. Particularly appealing is the lodge’s spectacular freshwater game fishing including a number of bream species, African Pike, barbel, and the uniquely African tigerfish, weighing up to 7kgs.
In the air, the spectacular birdlife at Mutemwa boasts 350-400 species that populate the rich, diverse habitat surrounding the lodge. Common sightings include White-Backed Night Heron and Half-Collared Kingfishers (just to name a few), various water bird species such as the African Finfoot, as well as numerous raptors. Guests can safely explore the trails between the towering trees of the forested islands, or alternatively employ one of the lodge’s expert birding guides for an exceptional birding experience.
Free roaming wildlife from the neighbouring Sioma Ngwezi National Park include hippos, crocodiles and hyenas, while herds of elephants are common sights during the spring months. Other unforgettable experiences at the lodge include sunset cruises, river canoeing, guided cultural visits to the local Lozi villages, daytrips to the Ngonye or Sioma Falls, and memorable champagne breakfasts served on the gorgeous white banks of the Zambezi. Adventurers can experience the wilder side of Africa at the Liuwa Plain National Park where Mutemwa run mobile safaris in late November and December, as well as May and June.
Accommodation at Mutemwa Lodge comprises six permanent safari tents perched on teak decks, allowing the tranquil hums and rhythms of the African night through the tent walls. All safari tents are equipped with twin beds and en-suite bathrooms, and are river-facing, offering expansive views of the water. Guests can enjoy their meals around a campfire in the boma under a blanket of stars, or lounge in the library, swimming pool, main lounge area, or the beautiful deck that extends over the river.
The lodge hosts a maximum of 12 guests at a time, making it the perfect location for an intimate family or group getaway. Mutemwa is accessible all year round, however for a premium fishing experience guests should visit the lodge from May to November when fishing is best. For unsurpassed birding, enthusiastic birders should book during the emerald season, from December to April.
The lodge is accessible via a 2.5–3 hour drive from Livingstone airport that receives flights daily from both SAA and BA. Alternatively, guests can choose the one hour transfer from Mpacha airport in Katima Mulilo. Anyone planning the scenic route through the borders of Kazangula, Chobe/Ngoma or Katima Mulilo should note that vehicles brought into Zambia require paperwork and stickers. This information is available on the AA website. Mutemwa also has its own privately maintained, 1000m grass airstrip for guests arriving by charter plane.
