The magical Buhoma Lodge is situated on the edge of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park that is located in south-western Uganda. The Bwindi Park spans 32,000 hectares and is a World Heritage Site with a rich and varied biodiversity. Most importantly, the park is home to the rare and majestic mountain gorilla.
Buhoma Lodge is an intimate luxury lodge that offers spectacular views of the forest and its accompanying wildlife, with the occasional mountain gorilla even roaming through the gardens. The accommodation comprises eight cottages that have been built using local materials and run off solar power, keeping in line with the lodge’s ethical ethos. Each cottage has comfortable beds, an en suite with flush toilets and hot showers, a private veranda and enormous windows for guests to revel in the gorgeous wild landscape.
The rest of the lodge comprises an elevated lounge and bar area perched above the sprawling forest canopy where a warm fireplace is lit in the evenings as the exotic sounds of an African night come to life. Guests can also enjoy delicious meals prepared using local produce in this area, served by the lodge’s friendly and accommodating staff. The lodge’s excellent hospitality extends to morning tea and coffee delivered to guests’ cottages for lazy morning lounging to the waking noises of birds and the playful sounds of monkeys.
The lodge’s serene atmosphere comes second only to the fantastic activities on offer. Gorilla tracking is available to guests with pre-purchased gorilla permits. Climbing through the dense mountainside and viewing these magnificent animals is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and an awe-inspiring adventure. Other activities at the lodge include forest walks in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, bird-watching walks with knowledgeable local guides, guided walks through the local village, visiting the Batwa Pygmy tribe to learn about their unique culture, curio shopping, and massages at the lodge. The lodge also offers activities in line with its social responsibility programme which include visiting the Bwindi Community Hospital as well as the local orphanage and school.
The lodge is open all year round with temperate climates of 25–30ºC during the day, dropping to 5–10ºC at night. The lodge is accessible via a 2–3 hour drive from QENP (Ishasha sector), a full day drive from Entebbe and Kampala, or a 6–7 day drive from Lake Mburo National Park. Alternatively, direct charter flights can be navigated to a nearby airstrip.
