Bakers Lodge (Murchison Falls National Park)
Bakers Lodge situated in Murchison Falls National Park of north-west Uganda, is everything an adventurer could dream of and more. The beautiful eco safari lodge is located on the south banks of the Nile River, a manicured private paradise in the heart of the African wild. The generous views of the river offer sights like no other with islands inhabited by nesting egret birds, elephants bathing, and semi-submerged hippos.
The lodge, constructed on wooden decks to enhance the cool breeze and the views, consists of ten luxury river-facing thatched cottages. Inside each cottage, guests are treated to extra-large beds, mosquito nets, an en suite bathroom with a flushing toilet and either a hot shower or a large bathtub depending on preference, and a deck that leads outside overlooking the river. The lodge’s central area comprises a large thatch lounge, bar, and dining area lined with decks for a full 180 degree view of the landscape. Here, guests are treated to full multi course dining experiences, as well as a vast selection of wines all served by the lodge’s excellent Ugandan staff team.
What makes the lodge truly exceptional is its access to a large number of activities. Game drives conducted by experienced guides are unforgettable, trailing along the north bank of the Nile River with sightings including lion, elephant, giraffe, buffalo, crocodile, antelopes, and an array of bird species. River cruises downstream to the Lake Albert delta area and upstream to the impressive 40m high Murchison Falls are available. The lodge’s river boats accommodate various activities, varying in size for game viewing, bird-watching, fishing, and romantic private dinners, family or corporate luncheons, and breakfasts on board. River cruises can be combined with safari drives for the best of both worlds.
Other activities include, chimpanzee trekking in the nearby Budongo Forest, challenging sport fishing along the banks of the Nile and on fully equipped fishing boats, with Nile Perch being the main target of many a fisherman, guided tours to the Murchison Falls and around the gorge area, and organised bush breakfasts in the rough of the wild.
Bakers Lodge is available all year round, however keen wildlife photographers are encouraged to visit in the clear-aired period from April to July. Bird-watching is particularly rewarding from October to November for its migratory species, while fishing is best during the summer months of September to April, although fish are caught throughout the year.
The lodge is accessible via road by driving north from Kampala to Gulu through to Masindi. From here guests can follow the Uganda Wildlife Authority signs to the National Park gate, driving through the Budongo Forest towards the Paraa ferry point and through the Mubako village. Alternatively, guests can travel via schedules and charter flights, landing at either Bugungu airstrip, a 20 minutes’ drive from the lodge, or at Pakuba airstrip which is a 90–120 minutes’ drive away. GPS co-ordinates of the lodge are: N 02 15 566’ E 031 31 896’.
